I've been very busy lately. Lots of student loan stress and lots of programming at work. These private student loan companies are nuts. I want to pay them what I can afford, but they want a set amount or nothing. They tell you one thing and do another.... But anyways, back to the garden updates.

My camera is still broke, so I'm borrowing my father-in-laws. Garden is doing pretty well. Bugs here and there, but nothing too bad. I ordered some organic BT (because I did find one worm in one tomato), so hopefully that will arrive soon.

I've gotten powerdy mildew on some of the dragon tongue beans. I think this variety isnt doing the best in our very humid environment. I sprayed some organic fungicide on them last night, but that usually kills the leafs on these beans. I might have to just pull them soon if I cant get it under control.

I've harvested quite a few suyo cucumbers and they are always great. Lots of cherry tomatoes also. Tons of big tomatoes on their way.

It's been in the high 90's almost everyday, with little to NO rain the past few weeks.

Unfortunately, I dont have any pics for this update. It looks like my HD camera is broken, so I will have to work on fixing it or getting a new one soon.

It was a pretty sad Easter this year. One of our baby chickens has been taken away from us by one of our hungry cats on Easter night. I put their pin in the greenhouse and put a screen over the top, but while inside for 5 mins, the cat managed to remove the top and get one of the chicks. And the worst part is, the cat took the only GUARANTEED female we have... so we will have to wait and see if the other two are males or not. But on another note, the other two chicks are getting big and doing well (except for the traumatic event of their sister getting snatched by the cat)

I should have known better to leave them out there for even that short amount of time, but things do happen. I need to get on building them a home (chicken coop), but I dont have the funds and it seems I have 100 things on my to do list. I do have lots of stuff lying around the house & yard, so I'm going to see what kind of design I can come up with, using what I have - and not having to buy much of anything (crossing fingers).

There have been lots of Blue Berries ripening and taste awesome! I've eaten a few, but I try and give them all to my son :) He loves them!

I've almost 100% completed my irrigation for my soil garden and surrounding plants. I added a couple new plant beds in the backyard and mulched them. The backyard is starting to look better every week.

I'm spring cleaning my greenhouse and getting it ready for its new hydroponic system this year. I think I will be going with a coco fiber mixture of sort (so the sun doesnt dry it out as fast - in theory at least).

I still need to get my kiwi, strawberries, pomegranate and blueberry plants in the ground (or big pot)... so that should happen soon.

All the plants in the new soil garden are doing great (except a couple tomato plants - one which I removed in fear it might have a virus).

I have been putting the chickens in the soil garden while we clean their pin and they love playing in the sand and eating the small bugs they find. Too bad their sister isn’t there to enjoy it with them anymore... but that’s Mother Nature - survival of the fittest.

On the side, I’ve also been working with Windows Phone 7 development and loving it. I’ve been really busy at work, so making time during the week to get anything done in the yard is a mission (most the time I can just do a couple small things, water and then its dark)

It seems like it’s going to be a hot one this Summer. Yesterday the temperature reading was about 95 degrees in my car.

Take care and hopefully I will have a good post with pics sooner than later =)FL Urban Hydroponicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14369520802862606884noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7452268940793765760.post-9563805415188802132011-04-19T19:10:00.000-07:002011-04-19T19:10:54.965-07:00Spring 2011 New Dirt Garden Pics After Small Florida Hail Storm
Spring 2011 New Dirt Garden Pics After Small Florida Hail Storm

All is going well in the soil garden. No bug/fungus problems yet and the shade cloth has protected the plants from the hail storm/rain that rolled in this evening. I also added a twine trellis for the tomatoes plants in the center of the garden for extra support on the vining (indeterminatie) varieties.

Today my in-laws and I went to the Porter Transfer Station to load up on some free compost. This stuff goes fast, so we got there pretty early. It's provided by the county and it's pretty much decomposed yard debris that is picked up in the yard trash or dropped off by landscapers. It's bring your own shovel and no machinery allowed, so it's a lot of work if you load up a truck load. (Good thing it was the 3 of us all shoveling) Today was not a good day to do yard work.... It was in the high 80's and I just finished, and I'm very tired!

I've recently sold all the tv's in my house and we are now using NetFlix. At first it was different, but after a while I found TONS of great documentary films . I've been using Windows Media Center with NetFlix, and that user experience is quite a good one. I've set up my computer in the living room, in place of the large TV I sold. I have the basic NetFlix package and I watch mostly streaming video. Awesome technology, without all the commercials/bs. Plus NetFlix replaces my 50$ cable bill at a much, much cheaper rate.

All the videos above are able available through Netlfix Streaming (you can watch instantly-without downloading) and their streaming service is unlimited streaming, so awesome deal.

I recommend to ANYONE... sell your TV. Cable is garbage and tv's are over rated.

I never thought I was going to get a fruit. So many dropped flowers and no eggplants. One day I noticed a clusters of flowers and it looked like there were two different types of flowers, males and females. I did the research and some people said that they are self pollinating (which looks to be true b/c some flowers have both parts). I've tried all types of pollination methods with the eggplant flowers, but all failed. Until the 'male' flowers appeared.

These 'male' flowers have a skinner stem and only contain anthers and not a stigma in the center of the flower. The female flower had a thick stem and a flower with both an anther and stigma. It seems that there is much debate on the male & female flowers on the eggplant. But in my experience with the 'Black Beauty' variety from Ferry Morse, the ONLY way I got my eggplant to fruit was to remove a male flower and rub it into a female flower. I'm sure natural methods (bugs/insects/bees) of pollination would have worked outside of the greenhouse as well.

When I rubbed the male flower against the female flower, I saw noticeable pollen from the male flower that was flying off. I've never seen any this from the female flower during all my pollination attempts.

In conclusion, maybe I pollinated the two flowers at the right place, at the right time. But after all my previous attempts, all of the flowers I pollinated with the male flowers are finally setting fruit. It's possible that although the female flowers supports anthers, they don't always produce enough pollen. But I'm no expert, so if you have the answer, please comment to give me some insight :)

Worm Sorting

Today I finially got around to harvesting the worm castings and making them a new bed. Sorting the worms can get a little tricky. The key is to move the casting/compost around enough so that the worms dig away from the light. This way when you grab a handful of compost at the top of the pile, it shouldnt contain too many worms. The worms should move them selves further and further down as you sort them. Towards the end of the sorting, you will have more worms to separate from the castings/compost. Any material that isnt all the way decomposed, it needs to go back into the new bedding for the worm bin. Before drilling into your pvc, test for a water tight connection between the pvc and the drip line. Get a piece of scrap pvc and drill the hole into it. The drill bit should be slightly smaller than the drip line diameter. Cut an angel in the drip line and twist it into the pvc about 1/2''. I tested it by hooking a pump. If you notice any leaks, try a smaller drill bit. You can also use aquarium glue for a water tight seal. Attach a drip emitter to the end of the line and insert it at the base of the plant.
Depending on the heat and the maturity of the plant, the pump will turn on 1-4 times a day for 1 min. I will monitor the rockwool slabs and adjust the pump timer as needed.

For plants started in a rockwool cube and when 1st transplanting them onto a slab, you may want to hand water them for the first week or two so that they dont get over watered.
The information below was copied from the site above. This is the waste you can add to the composting system:

Acceptable Waste to add to the bin-

Vegetable & fruit waste (citrus fruit should be added in moderation when using smaller bins)

Starchy materials – bread, pasta, rice, potatoes – all in moderation (beginners may want to avoid these altogether initially)

Aged animal manures (careful with rabbit and poultry – need lots of bedding to balance)

Shredded newspaper, used paper towels (common sense applies here), cardboard (great idea to add these carbon rich materials at the same time you add any wet food waste)

Egg shells (best if ground up and in moderation)

Coffee grounds

Tea bags

DONT Add to the bin -

Human/pet waste

Non biodegradable materials

Dairy/meat

Oils/grease

Harsh chemicals

Updated - 8/6/2010
"There are over 4000 species of earthworms but only 3 are considered composting worms. The common names for these three are the "Red Wiggler", "Blue Wiggler" and the "Tiger Worm". Eisendia Fetida is the proper name for the "Red Wiggler" and this worm is more familiar to us in the States."

I also used a food supplement for the worms that I added every other feeding. It provides the grit and helps with digestion. Its made from volcanic rock and other trace minerals. It last for quite a while. http://www.ourvitalearth.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=20
It was HOT (110 degrees)! Then the afternoon thunder storm clouds started to roll in about 6pm and cooled things off a little, but not much rain.

The biggest improvement I made over the weekend was digging a hole in my greenhouse. I placed my 18 gallon trash can (nutrient/water reservoir) in this hole, so its almost flush with the ground. This should help with some issues:
-The water shouldnt get as hot
-The drainage pipes can easily flow back into the reservoir b/c it's lower than the platform the plants sit on (re-circulation of water/nutrients)

This should make things much easier for me. The only thing that might become a pain in the ass is getting on my knees to check the EC and PH of the system. But that will not be a big deal.

I have some pics I will upload later tonight.FL Urban Hydroponicshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14369520802862606884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7452268940793765760.post-4866890233520481012010-08-02T13:01:00.000-07:002010-08-22T12:41:46.070-07:00Green Sky Growers VideoI found this video of Green Sky Growers.
